2001 Riesling

VINTAGE
The 2001 summer was extremely hot but was followed by an unusually cool March. In addidtion there was with rain in March in 3 bursts, 16th, 21st and 29th approx 20mm each. Harvest of our Riesling was the earliest ever occurring on the 29th of March (before the rain ?on that day thankfully). The early harvest was a consequence of both the hot summer and the low crop level; just 1.8kg per vine. This year demonstrates to me that the style of wine is most influenced by the temperatures in the month leading up to harvest with the style reserved and tight with crisp acid reflecting the cool March much more than the hot summer.
