2004 Riesling

VINTAGE
The 2004 growing season was free from extremes of temperature. Autumn was beautiful with no significant rain to upset the harvest. The Riesling grapes were harvested on the 16th of April which is close to our average picking date. The yield was just over 3kg per vine also near average. The vintage weather was warm and generally dry which presented no problems for us in picking or for the vines achieving full ripness with excellent natural acid levels.

TASTING NOTES

Aroma: Fragrant lime blossom fruit.
Colour: Straw with a light green tinge.
Palate: Fresh citrus and lime flavours with a crisp savoury edge. Delicate and lingering.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Region: Lenswood, Adelaide Hills
Variety: 100% Riesling
Oak Maturation: None
pH: 3.02 | Alcohol: 13.0% | TA: 7.3 g/L
Cellaring: Excellent ageing prospects, building in honey and lime flavours but without obvious toasty aged characters.
Food Suggestion: Ideal with seafood but can be enjoyed with a wide range of foods or on its own. Best with subtly flavoured rather than heavy foods.
Serving Suggestion: Cool. Best between 5 and 10°C.
Closure: A note on Stelvin. We now use Stelvin on all our white wines. Stelvin sealed wines in my experience have many positive characteristics. They; are fresher than cork sealed wines are free of taints age more slowly and gracefully than cork can be safely stored at more variable and warmer temperatures than wine under cork. Since ageablity is a fundamental attribute of our wines it is logical that we should seal our white wine with the closure which achieves this best. The question of ageing of red wines under Stelvin is still open. Steady but limited ingress of air to the wine to enhance development of reds is facilitated by cork under good cellaring conditions and is, to me, a reason to continue with cork for reds.

REVIEWS FOR THE  2004 RIESLING

93 points. Four and a half stars. Spotlessly clean passionfruit and lime aromas, delicate, fresh minerally palate; long finish. Screwcap

QUALITY 5 glasses=the acme of style; a fabulous, faultless wine that Australia should be proud of. VALUE 4 STARS=If you complain about paying this much for wine you’ve got a death adder in your pocket Geoff Weaver’s Lenswood Rieslings are outstanding examples of regional style.
Not only does Geoff make wine, he also paints pictures. The lovely pastoral landscape that graces these elegant labels is one of his. Geoff Weaver Riesling at its zesty best. Lime juice, green apple, slate and steel mark the nose, giving a fresh spring-like impression. In the mouth it’s clean and dry with great purity of varietal flavour, serious depth and length, and some mierally austerity on the finish. It’s attractive now with great balance and intensity, but really it needs time to evolve and show its best.
Serve it with Thai grilled chicken salad.
