Geoff Weaver has been involved in the wine industry since he joined Orlando in 1972. From his beginnings, Geoff progressed to the position of white winemaker for Thomas Hardy and Sons in 1975 where he was responsible for the vintages at Siegersdorf in the Barossa and at Waikerie and Padthaway.

In 1988 Geoff was appointed chief winemaker for the Hardy group of companies overseeing winemaking of around 10% of Australia’s grapes.

Recognising that the future of Australian winemaking depended on the quality of the fruit grown in the vineyard Geoff with his wife Judith, embarked on a project to grow the best possible fruit in a new state of the art vineyard at Lenswood.

This was a pioneering venture into an untried region. They planted the vineyard at Lenswood in 1982 and have steadily developed it to its current 11 hectares.

It was in 1992 that Geoff made the break from corporate winemaking and left to pursue his winemaking dreams at Lenswood full time. In doing so his responsibility went from 120,000 tonnes of fruit at Hardy’s to 70 tonnes from Lenswood.

Geoff’s involvement in the industry extends to membership of many industry boards and a wide range of consulting activities. His particular interests are in research, education and in ensuring a voice for the smaller wine companies in the national industry affairs.

Numerous awards for the wines demonstrate the outstanding qualities of this vineyard. These include  The Hyatt/Advertiser 1998 Wine of the Year, was for the 1996 Chardonnay, awarded not only for the best Chardonnay, but for the best wine entered from all classes. This is the first time a white wine has ever won this award.

Geoff Weaver has been awarded five red stars underlined in James Halliday’s 2016 Wine Companion which is the top rating for Australian wineries. It denotes a producer of the highest quality with a long history of consistent fine wines. Of the 2600 wine companies in Australia only 100 achieve this ranking.

Geoff also paints. It has been a lifelong passion which reflects his love of the land. He is a painter with a romantic vision who aims to convey the full feeling of a place to whoever sees his work. The light, the patterns, the subtle elements, the beautiful colours are to the fore. He paints what he loves  and loves what he paints.
