2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Vintage: 2001
Variety: 60% Cabernet 40% Merlot
Region: Lenswood, Adelaide Hills

Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines were planted at our Lenswood vineyard in 1983. There are 1.7ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and 0.44ha of Merlot planted. In normal years our blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.

The first release of Cabernet-Merlot from our vineyard at Lenswood was in 1988. The vines have excellent capacity to ripen their modest crops and provide flavour complexity and richness.

Serving suggestion:
Best drunk between 12 and 18°C.
Food suggestion:
Ideal with red meats but can be enjoyed with a wide range of foods or on its own.
Cellaring:
Concentration of flavour with ripe tannin and crisp acidity are the keys for ageable wines. This wine has all of these elements and I am confident that it will age well. With time it will show the trademark cedar character I believe it will be at its flavour peak 2015 to 2025.

Vintage:
The 2000/01 season was very hot in January and February but mild in autumn. We harvested the Cabernet and Merlot fully ripe on 6th of April with crop levels extremely low at under 1 kg per vine. This season and the resultant wine confirms my belief that the flavours of the grapes are primarily influenced by temperatures post veraison (mid-February in 01). Cool autumns produce finer, more subtle flavours while warm ones give wines of more overt character.
