Riesling was the first variety we planted at Lenswood in 1982 with the first small crop in 1985. Our Riesling is on the austere end of the range of Riesling styles made in Australia and as such is the logical extension of the fine, subtle long-lasting wines from Eden Valley which have such an established place among the great wines of this variety.

To me, the essence of our Riesling is gentle, fine floral aromatics with the palate showing great finesse and delicacy. There is a mineral element about these wines and a wonderful capacity to fill out and grow in complexity with age, free from the heavy, overt, toasty aged characters that dominate many aged Australian Rieslings.

Tasting notes

Assessment:

Tightly structured yet aromatically-lifted wine but with a supple mid-palate and a fine, crisp finish.

Aroma:

Aroma of citrus and lime. Fresh and lively.

Colour:

Pale straw with a light green tinge.

Palate:

Full of flavour with a crisp acid edge to the palate. Fine and juicy mid palate and a savoury dry finish. Tightly structured with a delicate, understated and long flavour.

Serving suggestion:

Cool to cold. Best between 5 and 10°C. Ideal with subtly flavoured seafood but can be enjoyed with a wide range of foods or on its own.

Food suggestion:

Seafoods with delicate flavours.

Cellaring:

Will slowly develop the honey character of classically aged Riesling with time. but will not become heavy or “kerosene-like". Protected by screw cap I have complete confidence in positive flavour evolution through aging.

Winemaking and vintage

Winemaking:

Crush, de-stem, gently air bag press. Rack partly cloudy juice to tank to ferment. Tank chilled to stop ferment at 9g/l sugar. We have made this wine with 3 months on yeast lees. My thinking is that our fruit with is naturally high acid levels can benefit from the balancing effect of the extended yeast lees contact plus the small amount of sugar. Bottling Aug 22.

Vintage:

Flowering on the 6th of December was a later than our average flowering date of 25th November. Harvest of our tiny (0.5kg/vine) crop was on the 31st of March which is 1 week earlier than our average harvest date for Riesling of 9th of April but later than recent vintages. Average harvest date 2011 to 2021 is 12th of March. The summer generally mild with no heatwaves and totalled 822 HDD against our long term average of 790. The ripening period was also dry and cool. Heat degree days for the year were 1295, close to our long term average of 1270.
